Abstract

          This work reviews the historical evolution of how humanity has perceived and interpreted the landscape of Southern Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. From the geomythological narratives of the Selk’nam people to the scientific observations of European explorers and modern geologists, the study traces the transformation of landscape understanding through cultural, artistic, and scientific paradigms. Early indigenous cosmogonies described landscape formation through mythic agents, while European exploration introduced geometric and cartographic perspectives from which the very concept of landscape was born. The emergence of geology in the nineteenth century, particularly through Darwin’s observations, incorporated time as a fundamental dimension of the landscape. Later advances such as stratigraphic mapping, seismic imaging, and plate tectonics revealed the region’s complex subsurface structure and dynamic geological history. The study concludes by highlighting that the perception of landscape remains conditioned by cultural frameworks, emphasizing the geologist’s role in expanding and integrating diverse worldviews into the comprehension of the Magellanic region.
